Nigeria: 51st Independence Anniversary

Happy Independence Day to All Nigerians. Nigeria is 51, and it’s a time to reflect and also celebrate. Take a moment to say a little prayer for our country. It’s not been an easy road, but we’re somehow still here. Happy Independence Day, Prayer 4 Nigeria after the cut....

"Prayer for Nigeria in Distress": All-Powerful and Merciful Father, you are God of justice, love and peace. You rule over all the nations of the earth. Power and might are in your hands and no one can withstand you. We present our country, Nigeria, before you. We praise and thank you, for you are the source of all we are. We are sorry for all the sins we have committed and for good deeds we have failed to do. In your loving forgiveness keep us safe from the punishments we deserve. Lord, we are weighed down not only by uncertainties but also by moral, economic and political problems. Listen to the cries of your people who confidently turn to you. God of infinite goodness, our strength in adversity, our health in weakness, our comfort in sorrow, be merciful to us, your people, spare this nation, Nigeria, from chaos, anarchy and doom. Bless us with your kingdom of justice, love and peace. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Happy New Month

Here we are in a  new month, Lord, let this month be filled with the things that are truly good—with the comfort of warmth in our relationships, with the strength to help those who need our help and the humility and openness to accept help from others.October is Breast cancer awareness month.

The 23-year-old switched from a flannel checked shirt into a stars-and-stripes bikini, a red bra, a mesh black top, and finally went topless before Graham climbed off his tractor to protest.
Graham says, “I had a conversation with Rihanna. I hope she understands where I’m coming from. We shook hands.”pics after the jump...

FIFTY suspected kidnappers arrested by security operatives in Imo State are expected to be paraded at the  Dan Anyiam Stadium Complex, Owerri, Friday.
Governor Rochas Okorocha will also use the opportunity to launch his administration’s security outfit, code named “Operation Rescue Imo”, with a full complement of 100 patrol vehicles.
A statement issued by the Special Assistant to the Governor on Print Media, Mr. Ebere Uzoukwa, said the citizenry will have the opportunity of hearing directly from the kidnap suspects.
He said: “About 100 branded patrol vehicles will be handed over to the joint security outfit. Imo people will also have the opportunity of hearing directly from over 50 suspected kidnappers give account of their escapades.”

Noting that the security outfit was government’s style of commencing community policing in the state, the SA also said Okorocha was determined to stamp out kidnapping and armed robbery in Imo.
Uzoukwa said: “The governor is determined to stamp out the twin evils of armed robbery and kidnapping in the state. He will also use the opportunity to address the citizenry on the state of security in Imo.”

Malta Guinness reality show presenter, beaten by thugs on girlfriend's order

Aspiring singer and presenter of Malta Guinness Street Dance Africa reality show, Deji Falope, is still nursing a swollen eye, excruciatingly painful ribs and a deep-seated paranoia. Reason; he was beaten to a pulp days back by thugs alleged to have been set after him by his half-caste girlfriend of almost two years. According to sources, the thugs visited the VJ and former Soundcity presenter’s Opebi, Lagos home around 7am, and quickly settled down to business, raining kicks and blows on his fragile body while he was close-marked by his assailants, foreclosing any chance of escape until they were done with their brief. As the story goes, some minutes after the thugs left, and while still reeling from the shock and pains, an undisguised police jeep came and whisked the fast-speaking presenter away, thus throwing family and friends into confusion as to his whereabouts. “Several checks at the neighbourhood police stations did not yield any result and his phones were switched off. So we could not reach him. It was much later in the day that we learnt that he was at Area F,” says a close friend of Falope.

The thin thread that bound the showbiz personality and his former love, who reportedly works at a Lagos-based animation and management company, snapped irrevocably when he discovered her sordid part. E-Punch source discloses that the half-Phillipino, half Nigerian lady actually has a child from a previous relationship; a child she had introduced to Falope as his niece and whom he treats as such. Falope’s friend says further, “Deji also found out that she had been scamming him all along while also taking his belongings like flat screen television, Galaxy Tab and so many other things in the course of their relationship.” Falope’s only offence was his discovery that he was about being scammed by a woman he had planned to marry last May but decided to tarry when he began to see beyond his nose.

What has now worsened the case, E-Punch gathers, is that threat letters are being sent to Digideep, as Falope is also known in showbiz circles, asking him to keep what he knows about the lady to himself or lose his life. Falope refused to speak with E-Punch on the issue.

Attempts to reach the lady were unsuccessful as at press time yesterday.

29-year-old Abuja lady, butchered by fiance

The Criminal Investigation Department, CID of Nassarawa State Police Command, Lafia is questioning Johnson Yakubu, a taxi driver who plies his trade in Abuja on the murder of his fiancee.
The body of the deceased, 29-year-old Victoria Akubo, was discovered by the son to the couple’s landlord on Friday afternoon.
Explaining the circumstances in which the body was discovered, sources in the deceased residence at Catholic Church Road, One Man Village, a suburb of Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, told P.M.NEWS that the taxi driver who had left home earlier in the day called the landlord’s son to help check on his fiancee since he has been trying unsuccessfully to get her on phone.
The landlord’s son who also spoke to P.M.NEWS said he subsequently went to knock the door of the couple’s flat, but he did not get any response.

The landlord’s son said he subsequently called Johnson back to inform him that there was nobody at their home.
But the taxi driver was said to have insisted that his wife is inside the house.
He asked the landlord’s son to check inside the house through the other door that leads into the couple’s flat at the back.
Following Johnson’s instructions, the landlord’s son told P.M.NEWS that he went to peep in through the window and saw the body of Victoria lying on the bed with her face covered with a pillow.
He said he entered the flat and discovered that the Victoria was dead with two marks indicating that she was stabbed in two places. The landlord’s son said he consequently reported to the police. P.M.NEWS confirmed that the incident was reported at the local police station before the case was transferred to Lafia on Monday this week. It was gathered that Johnson, in his statement, tried to deny responsibility for the murder.
But the claim is being faulted by Victoria’s family.
It was learnt that Johnson had initially told the police that he left home around 8 am that day, but changed his statement later when he gathered that Mama Reuben had called Victoria around 6:12 am, indicating that the deceased was still alive as at then.
The same Mama Reuben told the police that she later went to see Victoria at their home around 7:30 am, but left after she repeatedly knocked the door without getting any response.
P.M.NEWS investigations also revealed that though Victoria and Johnson did their traditional marriage introduction ceremony preparatory to their wedding about two months ago, the deceased’s family did not approve of the marriage.
Also, neighbours of the couple at their former residence told P.M.NEWS that Johnson, an Igala from Kogi State, like his wife, is in the habit of beating and maltreating his wife to be.
Victoria, it was learnt, was admitted in hospital for some weeks recently as a result of such beating.
A younger sister of the deceased who was living with the couple claimed to have left in protest of the domestic abuse of Victoria.
Solomon Akubo, an elder brother of the deceased, said the family wants justice to be done on the issue even as he alleged that the police are trying to sweep the matter under the carpet.

Belgian eccentric who thinks he's a PENGUIN

Waddling through the backstreets of Brussels, this elderly gentleman appears to have got slightly lost on his way to a fancy dress party.
But this man is not on his way to a party -  as he is Belgian eccentric Alfred David, who has spent much of the last 40 years living out his obsession with penguins.
The 79-year-old, nicknamed 'Monsieur Pingouin' (Mr Penguin) dons his favourite hooded black-and-white penguin costume when he takes trips out in local neighbourhood of Schaerbeek.

He is so obsessed with the creatures that he actually wants to be buried in Antarctica, dressed in his penguin suit and laid out in a coffin decorated with penguins. He says it is his 'ultimate dream is to be buried in a deep ocean close to where penguins live'.
The pensioner's life changed in May 1968 when his hip was injured in a car accident. His resulting limp was characterised by his colleagues as a waddle, and they dubbed him Mr Penguin.
As a consequence he embraced an interest in the flightless sea bird and began collecting everything he could find that had a link with the animal.
As his obsession grew, he eventually set up a museum in his home displaying some 3,500 items of penguin memorabilia.
However his wife was not so pleased and showed him and his collection the door when he told her he wanted to officially change his name to Mr Penguin.
His wife showed him and his collection the door when he told her he wanted to officially change his
Alfred later donated his penguin collection - which ranged from penguin lavatory paper to cups and toys - to a local football team to raise money.
Alfred has also appeared on dozens of TV shows over the years and was invited as a special guest to the 1992 Amsterdam premiere of Batman Returns - which featured Danny DeVito as the hero's nemesis 'The Penguin'.Television appearances are now rarer but he is still well-known in the streets of Schaerbeek, the Brussels district where he lives and where the locals greet him: 'How are you today Monsieur Pingouin?'
Being a penguin though does not stop Alfred enjoying some of life's finer things.
He still enjoys a glass of red wine - gripping the glass between his penguin-suit wings - although he still needs two hands to grip the glass.

The novel is said to be one of the best literature works of Achebe.
According to media reports, Joke is planning her 50th birthday party with her husband Olu Jacobs.
The Rivers State Governor, who is a graduate of English Literature from the University of Port Harcourt, is in love with the plot of the novel- ‘Man Of The People’- and his wish is that every politician would read that novel. What is not known is how much the project will cost the Rivers State Government as the sponsor.

Mandela's granddaughters to be featured on TV Reality show

Nelson Mandela's granddaughters Swati Dlamini, Zaziwe Dlamini-Manaway and Dorothy Adjoa Amuah are flanked by producers Graham Swanepoel, left, and Rick Leed.

The spotlight will soon shine on three granddaughters of South African and global icon Nelson Mandela, as the women become focal points of a new reality TV show. The program possibly will air in the United States starting in January, said David Manaway, who is married to one of Mandela’s granddaughters involved in the production. It hasn’t been announced on what channel it will appear, with Manaway saying only “negotiations” are ongoing.
The show came about after Zaziwe Dlamini-Manaway — 34 and the oldest granddaughter being featured — managed to arrange a meeting with Dr. Robert Rey, a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon who is the subject on an E! reality show, when he came to South Africa.

Dlamini-Manaway, her sister and a cousin met Rey’s executive producer, Rick Leed, according to information provided Thursday by Cutting Edge Communications, which is working with two South Africa-based production companies on the program. Leed also is known for feature films including “Where the Heart Is” and “Company Man.”
The sisters and cousin — all granddaughters of Mandela and all raised in Boston — set up Leed with two South African companies, New Vision Pictures and Out of Africa Entertainment. They discussed crafting a reality show following the trio’s personal and professional lives.
“The pieces of the puzzle just fitted, the decision was fast, one Skype call and the rest, as they say, is history,” said Leed.
Dlamini-Manaway, described as the “mother figure,” is the child of Mandela’s daughter, Zenani, who was born to Mandela’s second wife, Winnie.
Dlamini-Manaway is married to David Manaway, an American businessman she met while studying psychology at Clark Atlanta University, and has a 10-year-old son and a 2-year-old daughter. Her third child is due in January.
Her 32-year-old sister Swati Dlamini is a single mother with a 3-year-old daughter. She works in the communications field, as well as in setting up a charitable foundation focused on housing, education and health, according to show producers.
The youngest granddaughter to be showcased on the show is Dorothy Adjoa Amuah, 27, whose grandmother was the South African leader’s first wife, Evelyn. She has a law degree and recently earned her master’s in business administration — specializing in luxury management — from a school in Monaco, according to show producers. Described as sociable and fun, she lives with her brother and dog, Pan.
The description of the show describes all three women as “refreshingly authentic” and “positive role models to women all over the world.” The Mandela family supports “the right for their children to choose their own destiny and their own path,” the Cutting Edge release said.

Bill Gates in Nigeria

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has arrived in Nigeria to take stock of a campaign to rid Africa’s most populous nation of polio following a resurgence this year, his foundation said Tuesday.
Gates held talks with government officials and influential traditional leaders in Nigeria’s worst-hit northwestern region on Tuesday.
It was his first stop in a three-day trip, Michal Fishman, spokeswoman for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, told AFP.In 2009 and 2010, polio cases fell by 95 percent in Nigeria. The foundation said Nigeria’s commitment to eradicate the crippling, but vaccine-preventable disease was at its peak during that period.

But in 2011, it said, “attention to polio waned” and the disease has now re-emerged as a serious threat to children’s health, with 30 polio cases reported in six northern states.
However Gates was upbeat that Nigeria would win the war against the disease.
“Nigeria has achieved important success with polio over recent years and we are confident it can finish the job,” said Gates.
Nigeria is one of four countries — including India, Pakistan and Afghanistan — where polio transmission has never been stopped.
The UN has blamed the resurgence of polio in Nigeria on a drop in the number of vaccines while vaccination campaigns have also been met with resistance in parts of the country on suspicion the serum could be harmful to children.
The disease once crippled children worldwide and killed or paralysed 350,000 children in 1988. That was the year that a global effort was kicked off to try to make the disease only the second after smallpox to be eradicated.

Rapper T.I. released from Halfway house

Grammy Award-winning rapper T.I. was released early Thursday from the federal halfway house in Atlanta where he finished up an 11-month sentence on weapons possession and drug charges, a prison official said.
The 31-year-old Atlanta entertainer, whose real name is Clifford Harris, was assigned to the halfway house for the last month of his sentence after being released August 31 from a federal prison in Arkansas.
But shortly after arriving in Atlanta, the rapper was returned to a prison there because officials took issue with his luxury bus ride from Arkansas, his attorney said at the time.

Prison officials believed T.I. was conducting business on the bus, according to attorney Steve Sadow, who told Reuters that information was provided to show them that wasn't the case.
T.I. was transferred on September 15 back to the halfway house, where like other residents he was allowed to leave for approved purposes such as going to a job or a doctor's appointment.
On Thursday, T.I. "basically checked out of the halfway house for the last time," said Chris Burke, spokesman for the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
The rapper was sentenced in October 2010 to 11 months in prison for violating the terms of his probation on federal gun charges after he was arrested on suspicion of possessing the drug ecstasy.
It was his second stint behind bars in three years.

PDP chieftain son's body rots under Benue Bridge

The decomposing body of the 22-year-old son of a chieftain of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, was found dangling under the old Makurdi Bridge, Makurdi, Benue State capital, yesterday, in what seemed like suicide.
The deceased, whose name was given as Daddy Awange, was said to have just finished writing his school certificate examinations and was not known to have exhibited any sign of madness or ill health before he left the family house last Tuesday at about 10pm. He failed to come back.
The scene of the bizarre incident attracted many sympathisers and by-standers who thronged the scene to see the hanging corpse, thereby creating huge vehicular traffic jam on the route.
One Tartor Suemo, who identified himself as a cousin of Awange, said the deceased was declared missing a week ago after disappearing from the house.
Suemo said: “Awange mysteriously left home last Tuesday at about 10pm and nothing was heard from him until the story of his alleged suicide was reported to the family.
”This is strange because Daddy had no history of mental disorder. He had just finished writing his school certificate examinations. This is just unfortunate.”
Vanguard further gathered that the deceased was the fourth child of the PDP stalwart and Gubernatorial Liaison Officer, GLO, for one of the local government councils in the state (names withheld).
Attempts to reach the deceased’s father were unsuccessful as he had reportedly travelled out of town and could not be reached on telephone.
Meanwhile, family members and policemen were removing the corpse for burial at the time of this report.
When contacted, Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Assistant Superintendent Ejike Alaribe, stated that the Police was investigating the matter, adding that efforts were being intensified to unravel the cause of the death.
‘’We are not ruling out anything in our investigations,” he added.

77-year-old man impregnates 14- year-old girl

Amos Asante, a 77-year-old retired clerk, has been dragged to an Accra Circuit Court after he was accused of defiling a 14-year-old girl with whom he has fathered a baby boy...
The accused looked astounded as the case was called in a court presided over by Mrs. Georgina Mensah-Datsa, but he quickly pleaded not guilty to the offence of defiling a girl below 16 years.
The judge has, on the submission of George Assamaney, counsel for the old man, ordered a DNA test to ascertain whether or not the retired clerk indeed fathered the child.
Mr. Assamaney said his client was surprised at the allegation levelled against him and would like a DNA test to be conducted before the trial resumed.
Mrs. Datsa, however, declined defence counsel’s application for bail and had the accused person remanded in police custody while the case was adjourned.Presenting the facts of the case, the prosecuting officer, ASP Sarah Ekua Acquah, told the court that the complainant, Ofori Badu, is the father of the victim and a trader who lives at Kasoa, while the 14-year-old victim currently lives with her grandmother at Asiakwa in the Eastern Region
She said the accused person is a retired clerk and lives at Mallam, adding that the wife of the accused person is related to the complainant.
According to her, the 14-year-old stayed with the accused person and his family for two-and- a-half years.
The prosecutor noted that in 2010, the accused person had sexual intercourse with the victim and warned her not to tell anybody. The warning scared her and so she kept the matter to herself.
Furthermore, she said the victim later got pregnant and when questioned, she mentioned the name of the retired clerk as the one who impregnated her.
In addition, she noted that the victim gave birth to a baby boy on July 12, 2011 and a report was subsequently made to the police at Odorkor. The accused was consequently arrested and the case transferred to the Police Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit, Greater Accra Region, and the accused arraigned after police investigations.

Mrs Adeyemo, a petty trader and mother of four, was taken to the hospital on Saturday by her husband for the delivery of a baby, while a ceasarian operation performed on her on Sunday at the hospital produced the quadruplets.
When the father got the news of the quadruplets, two boys and two girls, he took to his heels and fled from the vicinity of the hospital.

“Immediately the message of the birth was conveyed to the father of the quadruplets, he took to his heels, saying that God has made my cup to run over,” his friend said, adding that he said, “as a poor farmer, I already have four children and I don’t know where to get the money to take care of extra four childrren.”
Since Sunday, it was gathered that Mr Adeyemo neither showed up in his home or at the hospital where the quadruplets were delivered to see his wife, Dr Tunji Adenuga, a doctor at the hospital, said the woman and the children were in good condition of health.
Mrs Adeyemo, a petty trader, however, appealed to the state governor, Mr Rauf Aregbesola and Mr Soji Ajayi and Evangelist Nathaniel Arabambi, both chairmen of Irewole and Ayedaade local government areas respectively, as well as their wives, to come to her aid.
She also appealed to philanthropists and well-to-do individuals to come to the aid of the family, to take care of the children.

Fashion Company, Via Davia files suit against Lauryn Hill

Lauryn Hill is facing yet another lawsuit stemming from her 2007 European Tour. The company Via Davia Vintage has filed suit in L.A. County Superior Court alleging that Lauryn has failed to return many of the clothes they provided for her trek. Via Davia Vintage says they gave Lauryn “an entire wardrobe of high fashion items,” which she reportedly agreed to pay for over four weeks. However, the lawsuit alleges that the former Fugees star only paid a small portion of what she owed, and has kept the majority of the clothes.
Just last month, guitar player Jay Gore filed a lawsuit against Lauryn claiming she failed to pay him for playing on her European tour. Gore also claims the R&B diva was incredibly difficult and unpleasant to work for. He is seeking 20-thousand dollars

National Assembly: No Gay Marriage in Nigeria

Bad news for gays and lesbians. Anybody wishing to contract a marriage with another person of the same sex had better leave the Nigerian shores or risk three years in jail.
Also, any person or group of persons who witnesses, abets and aids the solemnisation of a same gender marriage contract may get five years imprisonment or a fine of N50,000.
These were the highpoints of a bill for an act to prohibit marriage of persons of same sex and solemnization of same and other related matters, which scaled the crucial second reading in the Senate yesterday.
However, the bill, which was sponsored by Senator Domingo Obende and 13 other senators nearly suffered still-birth when Senator Eta Enang (PDP, Akwa Ibom) argued that the Criminal Code has already criminalised the act
.
The Senate President saved the day when he allowed the bill to proceed.
His position was that the bill should be allowed to go through the second reading and, during the committee stage, people who had observations against the bill could table same.
Subsequently, after a very exhaustive debate, the bill passed the second reading and was sent to the Standing Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, as well as the Committee on Health and Interior.
In his lead debate, Sen. Obende observed that same-sex marriage cannot be allowed on both moral and religious grounds.
“Even the Muslim religion forbids it, Christianity forbids it and the African traditional religion forbids it,” he noted.
He argued that same-sex marriage should not be allowed because it would lead to the breakdown of society.
While defining marriage as the institution where man and woman are joined in a special kind of social and legal dependence for the purpose of founding and maintaining family, the distinguished senator noted that by admitting homosexual and lesbian relationship to the privilege of the married state we would be devaluing and weakening the duties and the sense of obligation that marriage entails. He stated: “No same sex marriage is best.
The problem associated with it causes more sexually transmitted diseases, more childless relationships, more mental health problems and other major social problems, especially deprivation at old age.”
Other senators who supported the bill included senators Victor Lar, George Thompson Sekibo, Ajayi Boroface, Gbenga Kaka, Emmanuel Bwacha and Remi Tinubu. Lar noted that, from the religious point of view, same-sex marriage was ungodly and satanic and desecrates the institution of marriage as ordained by God.
He said the whole essence of marriage as ordained by God was for procreation. If same-sex marriage is allowed, she wondered, who would fill the world tomorrow and who would replace them in the future as senators?

A supersized Apple iphone

A German engineer has created a 10 times scale version of the iPhone 4 with a 40 inch screen which offers iPhone-esque computer functions - but also doubles up as a table.
The ‘iTableous’ has exactly the same design as the Apple mobile right down to the on and off buttons, the camera and the accelerometer
But before you start placing your order, be aware that the iTableous isn't quite as hi-tech as it might appear. It does not have a touchscreen and can’t even be used to make phone calls.
Its creator Benjamin Bachmeier has admitted that it functions more like a desktop computer, although it can connect to the Internet via wireless 3G.
The iTableous is 118cm long and 58.9cm wide, around 10 times larger than the iPhone 4, which is 11.5cm long and 5.8cm wide.
It uses a 40inch 920 x 1080 Toyota LCD monitor instead of a touch screen - so while you can't control it with a finger-swipe, it is at least satisfyingly large

Plane Hijacker held after 40 years on the run

An American murderer who escaped prison and hijacked an airliner while dressed as a priest has been tracked down by police - after more than 40 years on the run.
George Wright, 68, was arrested near Lisbon by Portuguese police at the request of the US government.
Neighbours said he had a wife and two children and worked odd jobs around the hamlet of Almocageme.
He was found thanks to a sudden breakthrough in the case when his fingerprint was matched to a resident ID card.

The fugitive, who is now said to speak fluent Portuguese, escaped from jail in New Jersey in 1970 after he had been convicted of the 1962 murder of a petrol station owner during a robbery.
The FBI said he became linked to an underground militant group called the Black Liberation Army and lived in a "communal family" with other members in Detroit.

In July 1971, he dressed as a priest, used the alias Rev L Burgess, and managed to hijack a Delta Air Lines flight from Detroit to Miami accompanied by men, women and children from his group.
Landing at Miami airport, they demanded a \$1m (£639,000) ransom to free all 86 people on board. All were released when the FBI delivered the cash.
The hijackers then forced the plane to Boston and onto Algeria, where they sought asylum. They were allowed to stay but eventually made their way to France, where Wright's accomplices were arrested and convicted.
However, Wright remained a fugitive until a new US task force began investigating the reopened case nine years ago.
Investigators were planning to look at Portugal as a possible escape route when his name was flagged up by checks on the country's national ID database.
He was arrested after a stake-out at his home and now faces extradition to the US.
